Our History

2006

Jim Sullivan, a retired minister and businessman, made a pilgrimage to Ghana, West Africa. There he witnessed the desperate condition of the country with its widespread and unimaginable poverty, the overwhelming lack of basic infrastructure, a virtually non-existent education system, poor access to health care, and little opportunity for jobs. Jim returned to the U.S. intent on finding a way to help.

2007

Operation Dignity International (ODI) was launched. The first year was spent building a foundation for ODI’s work in Ghana, organizing a board of directors, and developing a mission and vision based on Jim’s discovery’s and conversations on his trip.

2008

In 2008, Jim returned to Ghana and spent eight months exploring the villages, meeting with the elders, and learning about the country’s culture as well as the greatest needs facing Ghana today. He returned several times between 2008 an 2010, listening to and working with leaders in the community to sketch out a plan for development. They also discussed the role ODI would play in empowering Ghanaians to support themselves and move forward economically.

2010

In 2010, an executive team was appointed, and Jim led the first investment trip to Ghana, raising and directing resources toward projects in Ghana.

2011

In 2011, the first medical team was sent to Ghana to meet the immediate medical needs of local Ghanaians and assess longer term needs.

2012

In 2012, Operation Dignity International began leadership training for business and church leaders in Ghana.

2013

In 2013, the first dental team was sent to Ghana to meet the dental needs of local Ghanaians. The first project development leader was sent form the U.S. to Ghana, an the first 5 test cases for supporting youth in education and vocational training took place.
